When designing one's space, the vision often starts with magazine photos and mood boards that in turn, inspire the end result and desired look. However, the transformation of a room from the design rendering to the finished reality is often an overwhelming undertaking that frustrates many people.

Not everyone has access to a professional designer or an unlimed budget, yet everyone is capable of designing a home they love. Creatively Curated believes in beautiful spaces that are unique to the individual and ever evolving that are truly a personal expression of home through the lens of the individual.

When needing to design or redecorate a space, many people call in the professionals to handle the job. Interior designers work on all types of projects, but what does an individual do when the scope of their project or investment amount cannot accommodate professional resources?

Creatively Curated is here to help streamline the interior design process, by providing accessible, informative, and unique creative content. From identifying one's style to shopping specific related products, design can be made simply to eliminate common frustrations. 

To create a solution that provides easy to understand information to equip everyone with the resources to design a home they love. It’s not about waiting to design a perfect space, but rather to just start creating.

Design process starts by selecting images that show inspiration of styles to give consumers some direction. Then the consumer inputs information into the system such as: budget, timeframe, style, color, room type, room size, amount of light etc. for the scope of their project. 
 
Then designs and mood boards are presented based on style quiz results and the information inputted. Both mood boards and designs can be linked as shoppable lists to lead customers to specific brands and products.

  2. How do people go about decorating without the help of a designer? 
  3. How can people learn about their design style through pictures?
  4. Is designing a space something the average person does not have the ability to do or is the problem a lack of resources?

INITIAL QUESTIONS THAT DROVE MY RESEARCH

#1 When one lacks a vision of how their space should be designed, it often leads to hesitations as to what to buy.

“I really struggle to know what will look good together in a space. This makes me nervous to buy a whole lot since I don’t want my design to look bad”

#2 Knowing how to bring a room together based on one's style is an overwhelming process many people struggle with.

“Everyone takes quizzes now, so it would be great to take a quiz and be matched with room images and product designs to know what to buy for a certain price based on my style. Like room inspirational images that link to actual products I can buy”

#3 Breaking down the design process by providing resources and advice would make things easier and more enjoyable.

“Knowing where to shop and how to shop for my personal style is a real challenge. I would love if that process was easier since I’m too busy to shop around everywhere”

Affinity mapping helped to identify common frusterations and issues within the process of interior design for people.
 
These insights showed me what areas to focus on for my proposed solution.

  1. How might we eliminate frustrations and feelings of uncertainty for those looking to design a room themselves?​ 
  2. How might we guide consumers to identify their design style and shop for related products?
  3. How might we showcase digital renderings and inspiration boards to spark creativity and make design possible for everyone?
  4. How might we provide resources and information to an individual in one place to make design less overwhelming from start to finish?
  • After identifying several common frustrations and roadblocks within interior design, the goal is to discover creative ways to streamline the overall process.
 
  • The idea is to formulate a concept that provides consumers with information and resources that eliminate concerns by suggesting creative solutions.

At the wireframing stage, I was still formulating what I wanted the overall look to be for this project. Several different iterations were formed before landing on the final look I wanted.
 
With this application being forcused on interior design, it was important to include lots of visual photos for inspiration and shoppability within the design.

STYLE GUIDE

For my color palette I selected earthy and neutral tones to create a soothing appearance and make for a visually appealing customer UI experience.

Also, I took inspiration from similar apps to see how the design process worked on mobile, to then know how I wanted to design my capstone project.

For my high fidelity mockups, the colors and visuals inspired the look and overall appearance I was trying to achieve. Throughout my design flow I created several versions of the main screens to see what worked the best after two rounds of testing. From there I was able to make several tweaks in the style of the usability elements to account for better functionality. 
 
Additionally, the style quiz is one of the main components of this application and getting that correct was a big part of my creative process. The clickable options and accomponing icons that make up the quiz were edited several times based on feedback as well. 

Bringing this project to life from start to finish was a quite in depth process, yet extremely rewarding. Creatively Curated has a heart to help people identify their personal interior design style and shop correlated products to truly create a uniquely loved home.
